The counseling project for young immigrants
The counseling project for young immigrants was launched
in spring 2010. The project offers guidance and counseling
services for immigrants between the ages 16-25. The
counseling is meant for all immigrants between those ages,
but the focus is on immigrants who are currently lacking a
place to study or work. A youth can attend both personal
counseling and (the classes of) group counseling. Counseling
is based on voluntariness.
The main topics of the counseling are education and
employment. The aim is to help a young immigrant to find out
his own field of interest and to support him to seek a study
or work place which meets his expectations.
The most essential aim of the project is to create a new
model of counseling service which will remain as a permanent
service after the project. The service will be implemented
by the City of Oulu.
The co-operation network of the project consist of the
schools of upper secondary education, authorities, and the
non-governmental organizations.
The counseling project for young immigrants is funded by
the European Social Fund and the City of Oulu. The project
is a subproject of the Homelike Oulu – make Oulu your own –project
which is carried out by the city central administration, the
social and health services, the youth services centre, and
the Oulu Regional Business Agency.
