International activities
Workshops for the young have participated in the volunteer service included in the EU's Youth
Programme both as a sending and receiving organisation.
Who is the volunteer service intended for?
The volunteer service sub programme is intended for young people aged 18-25 and for non-profit
organisations sending and receiving them (such as associations, organisations, parishes and municipal
organisations).
Volunteer service gives both the young and the non-profit organisations a chance to get acquainted
with a new culture, to improve their own know-how and to make new contacts.
Volunteer service may be almost any type of work that benefits the local community. It can involve
work among the young, participating in an environmental project, preparing a theatrical production
or work with the disabled.
The work done by a volunteer must not replace paid work, and the work input of the volunteer must
not be necessary for the recipient. The period cannot be used as a substitute for military or
civilian service.
There are always three parties involved in a volunteer service project:
• the organisation sending the volunteer (sender)
• the young volunteer
• the organisation receiving the volunteer (recipient)
The duration of the volunteer service period is 6-12 months; that of young people with special need
may be shorter (three weeks to six months).
